The UK Budget takes the sparkle out of life.

Chancellor of The Exchequer, Gordon Brown outlined higher alcohol taxes in his Budget on Wednesday.

Just to recap:

A duty increase of 5 pence per bottle of wine;

A duty increase of 7 pence per bottle of sparkling wine;

A freeze in duty on spirits;

A duty increase of 1 pence per pint of beer;

A duty increase of 1 pence per litre of cider.

Wine for Spice produces naturally semi-sparkling wine to drink with spicy food.

As it happens my wines are taxed as still wines because they contain less than 2.5 atmospheres. But I am perplexed as to why sparkling wine should be taxed at more than still wine when gas injected sparkling lager, cider and even cola are taxed the same as still lager, cider and even cola. This unfair tax premium seeks to snuff out the sparkle in British lives.
